Camping on Moreton Island QLD

Camp near the coast and enjoy fishing, beach walks and quiet island mornings. Always follow tides, camping rules and beach driving safety.

Cape Moreton and northern Moreton Island camping trip
Cape Moreton

Drive north to Cape Moreton for views, walks and wildlife spotting. This is one of the best areas to include in a multi-day camping itinerary.

Camping permits, tides and safety

Know before you camp
on Moreton Island.

Moreton Island is a national park and all visitors must follow vehicle, camping and environmental rules. We prepare the vehicle permit, provide 4WD training and help you understand tide and access basics before departure.

🪪 Vehicle permit included

We arrange your national park vehicle permit on your behalf. Camping permits and MICAT ferry tickets are separate where required.

⛺ Camping bookings

Camping areas can book out during school holidays, long weekends and peak periods. Plan early if you want specific camping zones.

🌊 Tides matter

Beach access changes with tides. Aim to drive at low tide and avoid soft, narrow or high-water sections.

🚗 4WD training included

Every booking includes a safety briefing covering tyre pressures, beach driving, recovery basics and Moreton Island conditions.

🛤 Stay on tracks

Use designated tracks only. Dune systems are fragile and off-track driving can damage vegetation and wildlife habitat.

🗑 Leave no trace

Take all rubbish off the island, store food securely and keep wildlife wild. Moreton Island camping works best when everyone protects it.

Moreton Island camping FAQ
Do I need a 4WD for Moreton Island camping?
Yes. Moreton Island has no sealed roads across the main island access routes. Camping areas are reached by beach and sand tracks, so a suitable 4WD is essential.

The camping package includes 4WD hire, rooftop tent, mattress, recovery gear, tyre equipment, camp chairs, table, selected camping equipment, 4WD training and national park vehicle permit.
Are MICAT ferry tickets included?
No. MICAT ferry tickets must be booked separately and directly with MICAT. Book early for weekends, public holidays and school holiday periods.
Are camping permits included?
Your national park vehicle permit is included. Camping bookings and camping permits may need to be organised separately depending on your selected camping area. We can help guide you on what to book.
Can first-time visitors camp on Moreton Island?
Yes. Many first-time visitors choose our camping package because it includes the vehicle, gear and briefing. We cover sand-driving basics, tyre pressures, recovery gear and safe island driving before departure.
Which Moreton Island camping area is best?
That depends on your trip length, tides, experience and what you want to see. We recommend reading our camping zones and camping map guides once published, or calling us before booking.
Can I hire just the 4WD and bring my own camping gear?
Yes. Choose the Moreton Island 4WD hire option if you already have camping gear or accommodation organised.
