An island unlike
any other in Queensland.
Moreton Island camping is all about freedom — beach driving, remote campsites, snorkelling the Tangalooma Wrecks, sand dunes, fishing and some of the best island scenery in Queensland.
Snorkel or dive the iconic Tangalooma Wrecks — 15 deliberately sunk vessels now home to tropical fish, corals and sea turtles. One of the best snorkelling spots in South East Queensland.
Moreton Island has some of the largest sand dunes in the world — up to 280 metres high. Hike to the top, try sand tobogganing, or just take in the view across the bay.
Cast from the beach, rock platforms or a charter further out into Moreton Bay. Tailor, bream and whiting are all common catches — and with a 4WD you can reach the best spots quickly.
Each evening at the Tangalooma jetty, a resident pod of wild bottlenose dolphins visits for their famous feeding session. One of the most unique wildlife experiences in Queensland.
From June to October, humpback whales migrate along the coast. Moreton Island is one of the best spots to see them from shore or take a whale watching tour from Tangalooma.
Follow the Five Hills Lookout Track to Queensland's oldest lighthouse for panoramic views across the island, Moreton Bay and the Coral Sea. A rewarding half-day hike from the camping area.
Road rules, beach
safety & the environment.
Moreton Island is a national park. The same road rules that apply on the mainland apply here — and the environment is fragile. Please follow these guidelines.
Maximum 60 km/h on all beaches and inland tracks. 30 km/h around campgrounds and the ferry terminal. The same road rules as the mainland apply throughout.
Always check tides before driving on the beach. Aim to drive at low tide when there's more hard sand available. We provide tide information at collection.
Sea turtles, whales and dolphins are all present. Keep a safe distance and never drive on vegetation or disturb nesting sites.
Always stay on designated tracks. Driving off-track destroys fragile dune systems and disrupts wildlife habitats — and can result in fines.
Take all rubbish with you when you leave. Leaving waste behind harms wildlife and damages one of Queensland's most beautiful and pristine natural environments.
Watch for pedestrians on the beach at all times. Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and keep a watchful eye for soft sand, rocks and debris.
Important information.
Applies to both the Vehicle Hire Only and Camping Package options.

BEACH DRIVING SAFETY TIPS
Driving on the beach can be an exciting and adventurous experience, but it’s important to be aware of potential hazards and risks. If you are new to driving a 4WD, we recommend checking out our Beginner’s Guide to 4WD Terminology to familiarise yourself with the terms and features of your hire vehicle. Remember these safety tips on your Moreton Island getaway to ensure you stay safe:
Check Tides and Beach Conditions
Before heading to the beach, check the tides and beach conditions. Aim to drive on the beach during low tide, when there is more hard sand available.
Be Aware of Wildlife
Moreton Island is home to various wildlife species, such as sea turtles, whales, and dolphins. It's important to be aware of these animals and give them plenty of space. It's also crucial to avoid driving on vegetation or disturbing any nesting sites.
Reduce Speed and Stay Alert
Driving on the beach can be unpredictable, and hazards can appear suddenly. To ensure your safety, reduce your speed and stay alert at all times. It's important to keep a watchful eye out for changing beach conditions that may impact your driving experience, such as soft sand, rocks, and debris.
Keep a Safe Distance
Maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles driving on the beach can help prevent accidents and ensure everyone has enough space to manoeuvre. Also, remember that vehicles aren't the only way of moving around the island — watch out for pedestrians moving through the same areas as your car.
HELP KEEP OUR BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS CLEAN
To ensure the protection of Moreton Island’s unique and fragile environment, it’s crucial to maintain environmental awareness during your visit. To minimise your impact on the island’s ecosystem, please remember the following tips:
Take Your Rubbish with You
One of the most important ways to protect Moreton Island's environment is to take all the rubbish with you when you leave. Leaving rubbish behind can harm wildlife and damage the natural beauty of the land.
Stay on Designated Tracks
When driving on the beach, it's essential to stay on designated tracks to protect island vegetation and prevent erosion. Driving off-track can destroy fragile dune systems and disrupt wildlife habitats.
Respect Wildlife
Moreton Island is home to various wildlife species, and visitors should be respectful and mindful of their presence. It's essential to keep a safe distance and avoid disturbing any nesting sites.
